We at Horizons Sustainable Financial Services are pleased with today’s decision by the Supreme Court of the United States (the official text of the decision, with dissents, is available here) allowing for the freedom to marry one’s same-sex partner. As the President of Horizons and one half of the lead plaintiff couple in Griego v. Oliver, the deciding case on marriage equality in New Mexico (the official text is available here), I believe that the time for marriage is long overdue on a nationwide basis.
Marriage equality is not simply about gay vs. straight politics, it is about doing the right thing. It is not just about love, it is about fairness and taking care of those whom we do love and pledge to honor for the rest of our lives. It is about equality and providing for one another, about dignity and grace. It is about the many state and federal benefits that married couples receive — more than just passing on one’s social security benefits, it’s about being able to make funeral arrangements in case of death, birth certificates when a child is born, and easily transferring property to one another. It’s about paying bills together, filing taxes together, and puzzling through employee benefits packages together. But most of all it really is about the love that we have for one another, and being able to claim that love with the joy afforded to all couples in a public way.
We applaud the Justices who voted for equality — and we hope that those who didn’t will see that nothing can stand in the way of true justice and equal rights.
